Chapter 3

The expression on Josiah’s face made Lisa snicker.

He blinked, hard, as if trying to make sense of what she’d just thrown at him. “That’s not true.”

“It totally is,” she insisted. “I’m not going to be silly about this. I’m not claiming that I’ve never worked. But the truth is, when I started thinking about everything that I’ve done over the years, all of it just kind of happened. I have never done a job interview. I have never applied for a job. I have never had a job title.”

“You’re a cowgirl,” Josiah said instantly, which was really sweet, but not the point she was trying to make.

“I’ve driven a tractor, and I’ve plowed a field. I’ve also helped shoe a horse, inoculate piglets, and deliver way too many calves. How many of those things have you done?” She leaned back and folded her arms over her chest. “All of them, I’d bet. Because you’re Dr. Ryder. Veterinarian, who applied for and went to school to get that title.”

Josiah’s gaze narrowed. “I’m listening, but I’m not catching the gist of what you’re saying.”

Lisa waved a hand in the air. “This is probably why I haven’t brought it up. I’m not even quite sure what I’m complaining about. Or if it is a complaint.” She struggled to verbalize what was going on inside. “You know when you get together with a group of people for the first time? Everybody goes around the circle and introduces themselves.”

This time he gave a decisive nod.

She offered him a soft smile. “They say their names, and where they’re from, and what they do.”

“Oh.” Josiah frowned. His expression folded into concern. “You don’t have to fill in at the clinic if you don’t want.”

“Oh, this isn’t about that at all,” Lisa assured him. She abandoned her cup on the table, moving in closer until she could steal his coffee cup as well and then claim space in his lap. She squeezed him tightly, holding on as he wrapped his arms around her.

He was her rock. This was where she was meant to be.

She wasn’t even sure where the unsettled feeling had come from, or the mixed-up thoughts.

She turned her head and pressed her lips to his cheek. “Nothing’s wrong,” she repeated before sitting up to cup his cheek with her hand. “Consider it a mental challenge I’m untangling. I know I’m valued. I’m very happy I could step in and help at the clinic when Sharon needed to deal with her mom being sick. I adored helping Tamara when she was pregnant—taking care of the family and spending time with Sasha and Emma gave me a chance to create some amazing memories. I wouldn’t have given that up for the world.”

Josiah continued to look thoughtful. “But you’re right. You helped her and then Sonora with the animal shelter. Then you moved in with me, and ever since then you’ve—” Lisa could all but see the gears turning in his brain before his gaze widened. “You’ve gone
