Chapter 3
The expression on Josiahâs face made Lisa snicker.
He blinked, hard, as if trying to make sense of what sheâd just thrown at him. âThatâs not true.â
âIt totally is,â she insisted. âIâm not going to be silly about this. Iâm not claiming that Iâve never worked. But the truth is, when I started thinking about everything that Iâve done over the years, all of it just kind of happened. I have never done a job interview. I have never applied for a job. I have never had a job title.â
âYouâre a cowgirl,â Josiah said instantly, which was really sweet, but not the point she was trying to make.
âIâve driven a tractor, and Iâve plowed a field. Iâve also helped shoe a horse, inoculate piglets, and deliver way too many calves. How many of those things have you done?â She leaned back and folded her arms over her chest. âAll of them, Iâd bet. Because youâre Dr. Ryder. Veterinarian, who applied for and went to school to get that title.â
Josiahâs gaze narrowed. âIâm listening, but Iâm not catching the gist of what youâre saying.â
Lisa waved a hand in the air. âThis is probably why I havenât brought it up. Iâm not even quite sure what Iâm complaining about. Or if it is a complaint.â She struggled to verbalize what was going on inside. âYou know when you get together with a group of people for the first time? Everybody goes around the circle and introduces themselves.â
This time he gave a decisive nod.
She offered him a soft smile. âThey say their names, and where theyâre from, and what they do.â
âOh.â Josiah frowned. His expression folded into concern. âYou donât have to fill in at the clinic if you donât want.â
âOh, this isnât about that at all,â Lisa assured him. She abandoned her cup on the table, moving in closer until she could steal his coffee cup as well and then claim space in his lap. She squeezed him tightly, holding on as he wrapped his arms around her.
He was her rock. This was where she was meant to be.
She wasnât even sure where the unsettled feeling had come from, or the mixed-up thoughts.
She turned her head and pressed her lips to his cheek. âNothingâs wrong,â she repeated before sitting up to cup his cheek with her hand. âConsider it a mental challenge Iâm untangling. I know Iâm valued. Iâm very happy I could step in and help at the clinic when Sharon needed to deal with her mom being sick. I adored helping Tamara when she was pregnantâtaking care of the family and spending time with Sasha and Emma gave me a chance to create some amazing memories. I wouldnât have given that up for the world.â
Josiah continued to look thoughtful. âBut youâre right. You helped her and then Sonora with the animal shelter. Then you moved in with me, and ever since then youâveââ Lisa could all but see the gears turning in his brain before his gaze widened. âYouâve gone
